Position Title: Certification Project Manager
Position Summary: The Certification Project Manager will be responsible for defining and realizing the AEA’s plans for an international certification scheme for low-carbon ammonia. This includes defining the scope of work, deliverables, schedule, and budget requirements to develop, launch, evaluate, and scale-up such a scheme.

Position Background: The Ammonia Energy Association (AEA) is a non-profit organization that promotes clean energy technologies. Specifically, we advocate for ammonia to be produced using sustainable technologies, which would eliminate 1% of global GHG emissions; and for ammonia to be adopted in energy markets, enabling a hydrogen economy and helping to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors. The AEA was established in 2004; it relaunched as an industry association in 2018 and is growing quickly with now more than 110 corporate members around the world. Our staff is currently a small, international team, led by our Executive Director in New York, with a Communications Manager in Melbourne and contract staff in Copenhagen. Before ammonia can become a clean energy commodity, accepted and traded at scale, an internationally recognized certification scheme must be established to verify the low-carbon credentials of ammonia. The AEA’s Certification Project will result in the rapid development of a certification scheme for ammonia, supported by the world’s largest hydrogen and ammonia producers and consumers. We expect that this certification scheme will be piloted and launched in 2022-2023, and aims to harmonize with international standards and schemes to enable broad, cross-sector adoption. This is critical to the AEA’s mission and is one of the most important items on our agenda. We are now searching for a full-time Certification Project Manager to help us drive this project forward. The Certification Project Manager will be responsible for operationalizing the vision of the AEA’s Certification Committee, managing multiple Working Groups, and coordinating input from dozens of stakeholders. This permanent staff role will take ownership of a complex process, with a multi-year design / launch phase followed by ongoing oversight and management. The successful candidate will work alongside senior executives in sustainable industry and energy sectors; they will have a direct impact on the decarbonization of several sectors of the global economy, including agriculture, shipping, and energy storage; and they will accelerate the clean hydrogen economy.
- Define the objectives, deliverables, schedule, and budget required for the Certification Project.
- Develop a clear work plan for the committee and each of the working groups.
- Monitor and track progress to ensure the project remains on schedule and within scope.
- Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
- Provide administrative support for the committee and working groups (scheduling, drafting discussion documents, keeping meeting minutes, troubleshooting, etc).
- Manage relationships with AEA members and affiliates, as well as potential members.
- Draft, distribute, summarize, and analyze surveys and other forms of stakeholder input.
- Develop initial working documents, based on technical inputs from stakeholders, guidance from Certification committee and AEA staff, and independent research.
- Manage program-specific publication schedule (white papers, FAQs, talking points, media announcements), drafting and editing materials as appropriate.
- Organize and oversee program-specific events (webinars, meetings, conference sessions).
- Define scope of work, identify candidates, and oversee work products for any third-party contractors.
Skills and Experience: The ideal candidate will have:
- 3 or more years of project management experience (PMP certification preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to complete complex projects within scope, budget, and timeline.
- Confidence communicating in English with technical experts and senior executives.
- Excellent time management skills to complete assignments while working independently.
- Ability to solve problems creatively and manage disputes with diplomacy.
- Strong interpersonal skills and resourcefulness.
- Experience, education, or demonstrated ability in two or more of the following critical areas:
- GHG life-cycle analysis (eg, well-to-gate) or carbon accounting (eg, Scope 1, 2, and 3);
- Markets for environmental attributes such as renewable energy credits, virtual power purchase agreements, carbon offsets, or emissions trading;
- Programs that industry can follow based upon complex regulatory requirements;
- Industrial digitalization (eg, blockchain, IIoT platforms);
- Stakeholder consultation process.
Reports to: Executive Director Location: Remote work, flexible location. The AEA is open to international candidates. Schedule: Full-time position, flexible hours. The role will require meetings across all time zones and occasional early mornings / late nights may be necessary. Travel: No travel requirements; in-person attendance at AEA conferences / events is desirable. Status: Employee or Contractor status, dependent on location and candidate requirements.
